Is Hypnobirthing just for hippies? Separating the facts from the myths

Hey beautiful,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I'm guessing you're here because you have heard about Hypnobirthing but are not sure its for you. Maybe you are thinking it's just for 'hippies' or for home births.

Today, we're going to dive headfirst into the world of Hypnobirthing and look at some of the most common myths surrounding it. Chances are you've heard a thing or two about Hypnobirthing, but not all the rumours and assumptions out there are accurate. So, let's set the record straight and separate the facts from the myths!

Myth 1: Hypnobirthing is only for "hippies" or "alternative" mUms.

Hypnobirthing is for anyone who wants to stack the odds in their favour to have a positive birth experience. While some people may associate it with a certain "type" of person, it's not reserved for any specific group. In fact, many hospitals and healthcare professionals welcome the use of Hypnobirthing during labour and birth.

Myth 2: Hypnobirthing means you won't feel any pain.

Hypnobirthing doesn't promise a completely pain-free birth, but it does teach relaxation techniques and coping mechanisms to help manage sensations more effectively. It's about learning about the birthing process and how you can work with your body to make birth as comfortable as possible.

Myth 3: You have to be deeply hypnotised or in a trance during labor.

Hypnobirthing techniques involve a state of deep relaxation, but you're not going to be wandering around in a hypnotic trance. You'll remain fully aware and in control of your body and decisions. Think of it as a heightened state of focus and relaxation rather than losing consciousness.

Myth 4: Hypnobirthing is all about meditation and breathing exercises.

While meditation and breathing exercises are a part of hypnobirthing, it's much more than that. It includes education about the birthing process, visualisation, positive affirmations, have to navigate choices and techniques for managing stress and anxiety. It's a holistic approach to childbirth preparation.

Myth 5: Hypnobirthing is only for natural births; it doesn't work for medical interventions.

Hypnobirthing can be beneficial regardless of your birth plan. Whether you're planning a natural birth, a cesarean section, or anything in between, the relaxation and coping techniques you learn can help you stay calm and focused throughout the process. It can also enhance communication with your healthcare team.

If you choose a 1:1 Hypnobirthing course then the content will be tailored to you and the type of birth that you are hoping for.

Myth 6: Hypnobirthing guarantees a perfect birth experience.

Hypnobirthing isn't a magic wand that guarantees a perfect birth. Every birth experience is unique, and there are no guarantees. However, it can stack the odds in your favour of having a positive and empowering birth experience by helping you feel more confident and in control.

Myth 7: Hypnobirthing is too expensive.

It is true that Hypnobirthing can be expensive but you should see it as a lifelong investment. Your birth experience will be something that you will remember forever and you want to remember ir for all the right reasons. Also the skills that you learn will be useful for different aspects of your life, you can use calm breathing before giving blood or the BRAIN technique when you are faced with an issue that needs thinking through. The skills you learn are not just for pregnancy and birth.

Hypnobirthing is not as mysterious or outlandish as some myths may suggest. It's a valuable childbirth preparation method that empowers you to take an active role in your birthing experience, no matter what that looks like. So, if you're considering it, then do it. You might just discover a newfound sense of confidence and calmness that can make your birth journey truly remarkable.
